Life-saving, life-changing healthcare

Since April 1997, the Shriners regional pediatric medical center in Sacramento has been making dreams come true for children and families faced with orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns. More than 37,000 children have sought the specialized pediatric care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospital and all services are provided at no charge to patient families. While children come for different reasons, all are welcomed into an interdisciplinary community of care that nurtures the patient and family in mind, body and spirit.

Service Dogs for Children with Limited Mobility Children and adolescents suffering serious injuries to the spinal cord in the neck also face the loss of independence and personal control right when their age group should be reaching for new things. Carefully screened and highly trained service dogs make a vast difference in the lives of quadriplegics. Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California has been successfully partnering service dogs with children and adolescents since 1995.

"When the right child is matched with the right dog, they can achieve a level of independence that is otherwise unattainable by a person with tetraplegia."

Dr. Michelle James

Program Director Erica Daharsh, LCSW, Care Coordination

Gift Opportunity The full cost of a specially trained Service Dog is $10,000. All gifts received for this program are will be combined together to make one total gift. When the total of $10,000 is raised, every contributor can be proud of helping to provide dexterity and reach for a child with a spinal cord injury through the gift of a specially trained Service Dog.

Impact of Your Investment Independence in mobility, at school, around the home and with personal care are restored for our child-dog pairs. Even more importantly, however, is the self-esteem, trust, comfort and security children feel with their service dogs.
